The plot of land where this project is located has unique constraints that posed challenges for the positioning and integration of the building into its surroundings, including its northerly orientation, the steep elevation, and the shape of the lot boundaries.
To maximize the expansive landscape views, the northernmost portion of the lot was chosen for the house's location. Furthermore, in response to the strong northerly winds that prevail in the region for most of the year, a wedge-shaped layout was designed, with the living room area facing north. In the centre, the courtyard and pool are protected by the house on three sides and benefit from the opening to a line of trees to the southwest.
To address the significant elevation differences and minimize the impact of the building's volume, the entrance to the main floor (1st floor) is through the highest area of the lot. From there, the floors descend, with a semi-underground floor (Floor β1) and a basement floor (Floor β2), allowing for a seamless entry from the north patio. The large glass windows in the pool courtyard create a blend of indoor and outdoor spaces, but also allow for a view of the northern landscape from the pool and through the large living room windows, a value-added feature suggested by the client from the outset.
