The main objective of this study was to transform a former industrial warehouse into residential use without altering its street facade and maintaining its pre-existing volume. Located in a historic area of Faro, this building is also located within a protected area of one of the city's neighborhoods with cultural and architectural characteristics that deserve to be enhanced—the Bairro da Estação neighborhood.
The proposal includes two semi-detached houses and two studios, with all units accessible from Rua Miguel Bombarda. One of the objectives of the study for this property was to maximize construction capacity with independent units that could be used together or separately. On the other hand, the proposal focuses on the interior of the lot, ensuring greater visual and acoustic protection from the outside, as well as improved lighting and natural ventilation.
The central courtyard is proposed to feature a brise-soleil roof with a system of variable-angle metal slats to meet the needs of solar exposure throughout the seasons. On the ground floor, the houses are accessed through the garage and cross the central courtyard, with unobstructed visibility to the courtyard at the rear of the property, where a small leisure area with a swimming pool is proposed for each of the townhouses.
This study, submitted for approval by the City Council, primarily aimed to ensure adequate construction area and overall urban parameters to enhance the property's value. However, virtual interior images were created with examples of what a possible layout and interior furnishings could look like.
